Winter Series Taster Sessions

Over 100 riders have attended race taster sessions at Odd Down Sports Ground ahead of the Winter Series there which begins on the 3rd December. Avid Sport’s Felix Young has delivered sessions on behalf of Tryactive to two separate sessions already, with a third session still to come on the 5th November.

Students from across the South West attended a session held in collaboration with the University of Bristol Cycling Club, representing the universities of Bath, Bristol, UWE, Swansea and Cardiff. These universities have come together to create a welcoming environment for those getting into the sport.

There has also been a session specifically for female cyclists in the local area. Often a neglected part of the competitive cycling scene, there is now an appetite for better provision to novice racers and by making the entry to the competitive sport more accessible it will begin to flourish.

There is still the session for the local club riders to attend and hopefully the Odd Down Winter Series will see lots of new racers bitten by the bug of competition.

Cyclocross comes to Keynsham

The ninth round of the Western Cyclocross League on the 13th November will be held at the Somerdale Pavilion in Keynsham on a brand new course. Two local cycling clubs (Velo Club Walcot and Salt & Sham CC) have been working in collaboration to prepare an exciting cyclocross circuit to bring racing to Keynsham for the first time. Riders will be tackling a 2.5km circuit close to the old chocolate factory currently being redeveloped by Taylor Wimpey.

The management of the Somerdale Pavilion, Aquaterra, and Taylor Wimpey have been very supportive of the work done to create a venue for the event. With the support of Avid Sport and the local authority a course that will challenge everyone from those new to cyclocross to seasoned veterans has emerged.

The hope is that going forward this will become a facility that the people of Keynsham can use on a regular basis, and with the support of those involved that does not appear to be too far in the future. British Cycling have arranged for a cyclocross coaching course to be held at the venue in the spring so that the sport can continue to be developed in the local area. The local youth cycling club, the Sulis Scorpions, will be holding there club championships at the Western League round.

Avid Sport Supports University Cycling Club

Avid Sport is delighted to announce a new partnership with the University of Bath Cycling Club. Over the last few years the University of Bath Cycling Club has established itself as one of the pre-eminent university cycling clubs in the country, with success on both a competitive and a participation level. The club took home three gold medals and two silvers at BUCS competitions last season, as well as being represented by top riders in regional road races and time trials.

The club has grown in recent years and regular club rides can attract large number of riders from the Cake Ride upwards and it is this fun, relaxed atmosphere that breeds so much success for the club. With more and more riders taking part in rides with the club, it only helps to develop what the club has to offer and will continue to establish the champions of the future, be that in racing or the champions of the café stop!

Avid Sport has worked closely with the club over the years and supports the organisation of the University of Bath Team Time Trial which incorporates the BUCS Championships and into 2017 we are preparing to host the BUCS Road Race as well. There is an exciting year ahead for the University of Bath Cycling Club and Avid Sport is delighted to be a part of that.
